MAGIC IN NIGERI

Magic is a powerful force. It can accomplish simple tricks like healing scratches and bruises, or it can go on such large scales and to level a city, destroy a dragon, or bring the dead back to life. To prevent the use of such powers taking over everything in Nigeri, I'm sure you can understand that we as the admins have to take some measures in controlling the use of magic to keep RP'ing at a fun level - the level where you can still use magic to help yourself and your comrades out in storylines, but not to make magic so powerful that every problem becomes a matter of "Abrakadabra, and now it's all better".

Here is how spells will work.

When you join Nigeri, you start at level 1. While you are at level 1, you can only use spells on the spell chart that are under the level 1 category. There's nothing too spectacular there as you can see, but hey, that's why it's level 1. I'm sure you want to get to the better stuff, huh?

Every RP post you make will gain you 5 experience points. Reaching 200 experience points will bring you up to level 2, where you'll have access to the level 2 spells. But that's going to take 40 RP posts, no easy task. There are other ways to gain experience.

Missions

Every once in a while, the admins will create a storyline with set missions. Any number of you guys can choose to take part in this story. When you do, you can choose which mission you want to undertake (multiple players can take part in any one mission). At the end of the story, we the admins will judge you based on your performance. We'll take several criteria into account when we judge you, including teamwork, story writing skills, and creativity.

You won't get to see the judging, but we will give you pointers on what we thought you did well, and what you could improve for future missions. You will then receive the amount of experience we have decided upon, which could be anywhere from 20 to 200 (or more or less, it really all depends).

The Arena

You will also notice an area we've called The Arena. What's this all about?

We have caught many monsters and trained them for the Arena. Whenever you please, you can sign yourself up for a bit of a brawl. Choose any of the monsters to fight - however, they come with level and experience recommendations to guide you. You don't want to be fighting a level 8 dragon while you're still down at level 1 or 2; you won't stand much of a chance.

Be careful here - if you lose the battle, you'll lose experience (the amount will be determined by the admin overseeing the battle). However, if you win, you'll be rewarded with experience, among other things. What you win depends on your level and your opponent's - if you defeat a dragon at level 8 when you're at level 3, you'll get a huge reward, but if you defeat the same dragon when you're at level 7, the reward won't be so good.

If you are interested in hearing more about the Arena, PM one of the admins. Remember - you can only enter the Arena once per day. If you manage to defeat all the monsters we throw at you within a certain time frame, you can be in for a bit of a surprise...

Admin Overseeing

If you reach a particularly climactic point in your story, call an admin's attention to it. That admin will pay attention to the story and, if we feel the situation has been handled especially well, we will reward you.

Admin Meddling

That's right.

At any point, in any story, an admin might jump in with an OoC remark about some event that's about to occur in the story - don't worry, these events will never change the storyline or step on its toes in any way.

It's then up to you to deal with the situation. Like above, if we feel it's been done well enough, you'll be rewarded for it.

Forbidden Spells

Due to the insane amount of power they hold, some spells simply ruin storylines, sucking the fun out of it all. As such, use of these spells are strictly forbidden:

Raising the dead - Character death is a huge thing in a story. It loses all impact if you can simply resurrect them. If a character dies, they stay dead. Simple as that.

Invulnerability - Resistance to certain things is fine. It adds an extra element of depth to certain things. However, you can never be invulnerable - anything that would kill you, kills you. If a dramen gets a spear to the heart, that dramen is DEAD. This includes spells that act as pseudo-invulnerability, such as instantly healing any wound, or constantly teleporting away from attacks.

Insta-death - Combat needs to be a conflict. It needs to have tension. That's the whole point of having it. If you can just snap your fingers and destroy a dragon, not only does it make things entirely unfair, but it makes thing unfun and, to be honest, BORING AS HELL.

Shapeshifting - The problems with shapeshifting are threefold. First of all, it defeats the purpose of the whole race system that we've taken so much time and effort to craft. Second of all, it's massively powerful - practically having the strengths of all races and none of the weaknesses, and then some. And finally, introduce shapeshifting, and all of a sudden, the whole story's about shapeshifting. We have a specially crafted race of shapeshifters - if you wanna be multiple things, go for them.

Uber teleportation - Teleportation itself is fine. However, stories can get incredibly boring if teleportation can just get you instantly exactly where you need to go, if it can get you out of imprisonment in a snap, or out of any conflict of dangerous situation. Teleportation is fine - just keep it under control.

Empires of Nigeri

For the past many years there have been two empires which dominate the continent of Nigeri.  The western empire is known as the Ordragc Empire, and dates back over 100,000 years.  The eastern empire is known as the Empire of the Black Dragon, and is a fairly young empire only surfacing around 8000 years ago.

Ordragc Empire

Formed after the Dragon-gryphon war at the beginning of this age (Approximately 111,000 years ago) the Ordragc Empire is based on a traditional monarchy system.  The palace rests atop a mountain at the edge of the seaside capital city of Etrish.  The Rathi (A dragon term for male ruler, most races simply call the ruler Emperor or King) resides, meets, and judges here.  While under heavy guard at all times, the palace is kept open to the public at all times for emergency appearances with the Rathi.  While the Rathi holds supreme control, he is aided by a high council of elders, and his empire is divided into regions each with it's own governing lord or lady (the terms held loosely due to the fact that qualified members of any race are elegable if a lottery need be held for a successor).

There is an ancient perminant law set down by the Great Rathi Ahgjan that every Rathi is bound to follow and enforce.  Although they commonly serve under him, if he fails, the Council of Elders takes command and has the right to name a new Rathi.

Overall, the Ordragc Empire appears to be a peacful, self sufficient land, abundant with litte-touched wilderness and agriculture.  While the army is large, it is all volunteer served and primarily exists to guard the empires people from invasion from the Empire of the Black Dragon across the desert of the middlelands.

Empire of the Black Dragon

A high contrast to the Ordragc Empire, the Empire of the Black Dragon is a religious dictatorship.  Ruled by the High Priest of Synacra,  Astanulis.  The people of this empire believe that the High Priest's will is truly that of their great dragon god Synacra who ascended to the heavens to battle the evil gods that interfered in his war against the evil and selfish Ordragc bloodline.  The High Priest holds the great magical abilities of the god he is said to serve.

The Empire of the Black Dragon is a military society.  Every adolescent of every race is required to join the army and sacrifice their lives to serve Synacra through a blood pact.  Unlike the 'infidel' Ordragc followers of the west, there are few farmers of free merchants in this area.  All needs are supplied by the empire and in exchange the only free will is that of Synacra.  Many families attempt to raise large families in exchange for more provisions. Once any person grows old enough to not be effective in the army they are taken and 'processed' and dissapear.  It is said they are killed, and their bodies and any other bodies discovered (casualties, executed prisoners, etc.) are processed into the food for the empire.

Much of the landscape on this side of the continent is part of one city or another to allow for the ever growing military population.  The massive temple of Synacra is built on top of the remains of the Ordragc's former capital of Tha'an at the center of the empire.

Interesting facts

  • Of all the Ordragcs in recorded history, the two names most honored by the Ordragc Empire and most spited by the Empire of the Black Dragon are Arix and Ahgjan.  "The Great Rathi Ahgjan" is seen as the savior of his empire through his creation of the current nation, thus to have his name is a rare honor.  His brother Arix was his chief advisor and sacrificed himself to kill Synacra, today every parent hoping for a newborn's life to be that of a wise hero will name their child Arix.  The High Priest of Synacra however states that Ahgjan refused the throne to Synacra as was supposed to be given, and that Arix was an evil god encarnate sent to stop Synacra from bringing peace, and anyone with these two names is to be killed without trial of any kind.
